I can feel the world opening up
My abstract paintings are an attempt to understand the world differently from the way I was taught. By studying artists that portray themes of the metaphysical and the spiritual in their work, such as Hilma Af Klint, Yevgenya Baras, and Jose Benitez Sanchez, I challenge my current philosophical understandings of humanity, the world, and religion. I use paper pulp, a medium that has deep origins in Mexican culture and craft, to create the surface I paint on. I'm interested in portraying themes of reproduction, creation, and similar cycles that are found in both the human body and the universe. In many religions, depictions or conversations of such motifs are taboo. Ultimately, these paintings have become a way to free myself from these cultural restrictions. It has become a way of listening to my ego again, while trying to honor my culture and myself.
